Recognizing organic honey

An organic hive

As mentioned above, the materials used in the manufacture of beehives must be organic. The body, frames and supers must be made of wood. Other natural materials can also be used, to limit the risk of environmental contamination.

Hives should be treated with organic wax. Sick colonies, such as varroa mites or pests, are treated with natural products.

Thoughtful breeding

Responsible breeding means ensuring sufficient pollen and honey reserves for the winter. Ideally, at the end of production.

It also means using harvesting methods that are non-stressful for the bees, and extracting honey only when it is ripe. Among the rules is a ban on destroying bees in the combs when harvesting a beekeeping product.

What do bees eat?

During the wintering period, the bees are provided with a sufficient quantity of honey and pollen. However, in difficult climatic conditions, these reserves can be depleted. As a result, the bees can starve to death. This is where man comes in, through artificial feeding.

Foraging in organic fields
