Moroccan kessa glove - Traditional hammam exfoliating glove

The kessa glove is the traditional exfoliating glove of the Moroccan hammam. Tightly woven, it is used on soaped skin, with black beldi soap, to exfoliate the body, lift away dead skin cells and leave the skin clean and smooth. Miel Impérial offers it in a soft version and a coarse version, in several colours, to choose according to your skin's sensitivity and the intensity of scrub you are looking for.

Miel Impérial kessa glove: the hammam glove, soft or coarse

• The kessa glove is the traditional exfoliating glove of the Moroccan hammam, used for generations for body exfoliation.

• It is worn on the hand and used on wet, soaped skin, after applying black beldi soap, with long, firm movements.

• Two weaving intensities exist: the soft kessa, for sensitive skin and maintenance scrubbing; the coarse kessa, for deep exfoliation of thick or dry skin.

• It is available in several colours, from traditional white to deeper dyes, handy for telling each person's glove apart.

• Before buying a Moroccan kessa glove, check the weaving intensity (soft or coarse) and the composition indicated on the product page.

• A personal hygiene accessory: rinse it, wring it out and let it air-dry after each use.

What is the kessa glove?

The kessa glove is a body-scrub accessory made of tightly woven fabric, worn like a glove. Depending on regions and manufacturers, it is also called a hammam glove, an oriental exfoliating glove or a kessa exfoliating glove. Its weave, finer or coarser depending on the model, creates a mechanical friction that lifts away dead skin cells, soap residue and impurities from the skin's surface.

The kessa is neither a soap nor a sponge: it is the tool of the scrub. It does not clean by itself, it exfoliates. That is why the ritual always pairs it with beldi black soap, which cleanses and prepares the skin, while the glove does the mechanical work. The material varies by manufacturer, often a weave of viscose or cotton: check the composition indicated on each model.

A hammam ritual accessory for centuries

In Morocco, the hammam is much more than a bathhouse: it is a complete ritual, handed down from generation to generation. You settle into the moist heat, coat yourself with black beldi soap, let it sit, then the scrub is done with the kessa glove, before rinsing. It is this pass with the glove that leaves the skin clean and smooth.

Still today, the kessa glove remains the scrubbing accessory in hammams as at home: a good hot shower is enough to recreate, at home, the essential of the ritual. It is part of those simple gestures that get passed on, like the choice of soap and the moment of moisturising after the scrub.

Soft kessa or coarse kessa?

Not all skin reacts the same way to exfoliation. That is why the kessa glove comes in two weaving intensities, to choose according to your skin and your scrubbing experience.

The soft kessa

A finer, more supple weave that exfoliates without being harsh. Ideal for sensitive skin, maintenance scrubbing or a first use.

The coarse kessa

A denser, rougher weave for a deep scrub. Popular with thick or dry skin and with hammam regulars.

The colours

Traditional white, black, pink, blue, green... depending on the models available in store. Colour does not indicate intensity: check the soft or coarse mention.

One glove per person

A personal hygiene accessory, the kessa glove is not shared. The colours let everyone recognise their own.

Why use a kessa glove?

An effective scrub

The friction of the weave lifts dead skin cells where the hand alone is not enough. The skin looks clean and smooth as soon as you rinse.

The companion of black soap

Used after beldi black soap, the glove completes the ritual: the soap cleanses and prepares, the glove exfoliates. The two reinforce each other.

Practical and long-lasting

A well-maintained kessa glove is used many times. No device, no expensive consumable: a glove, water and soap.

Skin ready to be moisturised

After the scrub, body oils and milks are applied on clean skin: it is the moment of the ritual when you moisturise.

How to use the kessa glove at the hammam or at home?

1. Prepare the skin

In the moist heat of a good hot shower or of the hammam, apply beldi black soap to wet skin and let it sit for a few minutes.

2. Scrub with the glove

Wet the glove, wring it out, put it on, then rub the body with long, firm movements, without pressing hard: the weave does the work.

3. Rinse

Rinse with lukewarm water. During the scrub, the skin may form little rolls: this is the mix of dead cells, sebum and soap, a normal phenomenon.

4. Moisturise

Dry yourself, then apply a body oil or lotion. Repeat the scrub once or twice a week, no more.

Directions for use

Use the kessa glove on wet, soaped skin, never dry, and without pressing excessively: it is the weave that exfoliates, not the strength of your arms. One or two uses per week are enough for most skins; beyond that, you risk irritating the skin and weakening its skin barrier. The kessa glove is for the body only: for the face, choose a gentler exfoliant, suited to that fragile area. After the scrub, avoid immediate sun exposure if your skin is sensitive, and remember to moisturise.

Also to discover

The kessa glove always goes hand in hand with black soap: discover our Moroccan beldi soap with argan oil, the traditional partner of the hammam scrub.

Precautions for use

• Do not use on broken skin: wounds, irritations, sunburn, burns or inflamed areas.

• For the body only: do not use it on the face or on very sensitive areas.

• Sensitive skin: choose the soft kessa, rub lightly and space out uses. In case of persistent redness or a burning sensation, stop the scrub.

• Do not share the glove: it is a personal hygiene accessory. Provide one glove per person.

• Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, body acne) or dermatological treatment in progress: ask your doctor's advice before using a scrub glove.

• Avoid stacking exfoliations on the same day (granular scrub, peel, hair removal): space them a few days apart.

• In case of irritation, stop using it. This glove is a scrubbing accessory: it does not replace a treatment or the advice of a health professional.

Care and storage

After each use, rinse the glove with clear water, wring it out and hang it in the open air, away from stagnant moisture: a glove that dries completely between two uses stays more hygienic and lasts longer. Wash it regularly, by hand or in the machine at low temperature according to the manufacturer's instructions, and replace it when the weave slackens, hardens or wears out. Do not leave it in a damp ball at the bottom of a bag or of the shower.

FAQ - Kessa glove

What is a kessa glove?

It is the traditional exfoliating glove of the Moroccan hammam: a tightly woven fabric worn on the hand and used on soaped skin to exfoliate the body and lift away dead skin cells.

What is the difference between a soft kessa glove and a coarse kessa glove?

The intensity of the weave. The soft kessa, with its finer weave, suits sensitive skin and maintenance scrubbing; the coarse kessa, rougher, offers a deep scrub suited to thick or dry skin and to regulars.

How do you use a kessa glove?

On wet skin, after applying beldi black soap and letting it sit: rub the body with long, firm movements, then rinse with lukewarm water and moisturise the skin. Use it once or twice a week.

Can you use a kessa glove every day?

No. One or two uses per week are enough for most skins. Scrubbing too often risks irritating the skin and weakening the skin barrier.

Can the kessa glove be used on the face?

No, the weave of the kessa glove is designed for the body. Facial skin is thinner: use for it an exfoliant specifically suited.

Why does the skin roll during the scrub?

These little rolls are the mix of dead cells, sebum and soap lifted by the friction. It is a normal phenomenon and the sign that the scrub is working.

Which colour of kessa glove should I choose?

Colour has no effect on effectiveness: white is the traditional colour, the other shades mostly let everyone recognise their own glove. It is the intensity of the weave, soft or coarse, that counts.

Kessa glove or horsehair glove: what is the difference?

The horsehair glove is another exfoliating accessory, traditionally made of hard natural fibres and more abrasive. The kessa glove, in textile weave, offers a more controlled exfoliation, available in two intensities.

How do you care for a kessa glove?

Rinse it with clear water after each use, wring it out and let it dry in the open air. Wash it regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions and replace it when the weave slackens or wears out.
