In the date palm, male and female trees are separate. The pollen is produced by the inflorescences of the male trees and enables the fertilisation of the female trees, the ones that will bear dates. In palm groves this pollination is often carried out by hand by farmers, a practice passed down since Antiquity.
This pollen is harvested only once a year, at flowering, which naturally limits available quantities. Long used in the traditions of the Arab world, it comes as a fine, pale yellow powder with a very recognisable smell.
Why the capsule format?
Anyone who has opened a jar of palm pollen knows the problem: the powder is extremely volatile. A draught, a hasty movement, and part of the product flies off. That is precisely why it is traditionally mixed with honey or royal jelly, as much to bind it as for the taste.
