Sidr: a treasured tree with countless traditional uses

The thorny jujube tree (Ziziphus, known as sidr in Arabic and sometimes called nabk) is one of the most iconic trees of arid regions, stretching from southern Morocco to the Arabian Peninsula. It is the source of the renowned jujube honey, one of the world's most prized honeys. Yet the tree is valued for far more than its nectar: its leaves, harvested and naturally dried in the sun, have long been an essential part of traditional personal care and cleansing rituals throughout the Arab and Muslim world.

Ground into a fine powder or infused in water, sidr leaves produce a light, natural lather, much like ghassoul clay or black soap. This explains why they have been used for generations as a natural cleansing treatment for both hair and body. Long before modern shampoos existed, people traditionally washed their hair with sidr.

A leaf steeped in tradition

The jujube tree holds a special place in Islamic culture and tradition, where it has been valued since the earliest days of Islam. Its leaves have been passed down through generations for personal care and important life rituals. Choosing sidr leaves means reconnecting with a timeless cultural heritage.

How to use sidr leaves

Hair rinse

Simmer a handful of leaves in 1 litre of water for 15 minutes. Allow the liquid to cool, strain it, then use it as the final rinse after shampooing. This traditional routine helps leave hair looking shiny and feeling light.

Sidr hair mask

Grind the dried leaves into a fine powder, then mix with lukewarm water to create a smooth paste similar to ghassoul clay. Apply to damp hair, leave on for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. One application per week is generally sufficient.

Natural body cleanser

The same paste can be used in the shower or hammam as an alternative or complement to soap for traditional body cleansing. Its delicate lather and subtle botanical fragrance evoke the authentic rituals of a traditional hammam.

As a herbal infusion

Steep a few leaves in hot water for 10 minutes to prepare a mild herbal infusion traditionally enjoyed in the evening throughout North Africa. Sweeten it with a spoonful of jujube honey for the most authentic pairing.

FAQ – Dried jujube leaves (sidr)

What are dried jujube leaves used for?

Traditionally, they are used in three different ways: as a hair rinse or hair mask, as a natural body cleanser—the infusion creates a light lather—and as a herbal infusion. These traditional uses have been passed down for generations across North Africa and the Middle East.

How do you wash your hair with sidr leaves?

There are two methods: prepare a decoction by simmering a handful of leaves in 1 litre of water for 15 minutes and using it as a final rinse, or grind the leaves into a powder, mix with lukewarm water to form a paste and apply it as a hair mask for 20 to 30 minutes. In both cases, rinse thoroughly with clean water.

What is the difference between sidr and jujube?

There is no difference. "Sidr" is simply the Arabic name for the jujube tree. They refer to the same leaves from the same tree—the one that produces the prized jujube honey, also known as sidr honey.

Are sidr leaves suitable for all hair types?

Yes. Sidr leaves are traditionally used as a gentle cleansing treatment for all hair types, including curly, coily and colour-treated hair. As with any natural botanical product, it is advisable to test on a small section of hair first if your hair is particularly sensitive.

Can jujube leaves be enjoyed as a herbal tea?

Yes. Simply steep a few leaves in hot water for around 10 minutes to prepare a mild herbal infusion, traditionally enjoyed in the evening. To discover more herbal blends, browse our selection of teas and herbal teas.
