A shampoo washes hair: what we will not promise

A solid shampoo falls under the European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. A cosmetic claim must be fair, verifiable, and must not attribute to the product properties it does not have. Above all, a cosmetic may not claim to act on a medical condition: the moment it does, it moves into the medicine category, for which it has neither authorisation nor dossier.

In concrete terms, you will not read here that this bar acts on eczema or psoriasis, that it regulates the pH of the scalp, that it rebuilds the hair fibre, or that it is «free of flaws». Those are sentences that circulate about this kind of product and they have no basis. Scalp conditions are a matter for a dermatologist, not a shampoo. What this bar does: it washes, it smells of nigella, and it lasts a long time.

Composition

• Water

• Black cumin oil (Nigella sativa) from Ethiopia

• Cleansing agent of natural origin

• The full INCI list and the batch number are printed on the pack: that is what counts.

The formula is short, which explains both its apparent mildness and its modest lather. A shampoo that lathers heavily generally contains stronger surfactants: less lather does not mean less clean, it is a matter of formulation rather than effectiveness.

Nigella, and what it brings to a shampoo

Nigella (Nigella sativa) is a plant whose black seeds are pressed for oil. The name habachia refers to the Ethiopian origin, known for its full-bodied oil and distinctive smell. That smell, markedly spicy, is what you will notice in use: it appeals or it surprises, but it does not hide.

In a shampoo, a plant oil plays the part of the fatty component: it softens the formula and limits the stripping effect of washing. That is a cosmetic function, and it stops there. If your scalp itches, flakes or reddens persistently, what you need is a dermatological opinion, not a change of shampoo.

How to use it

Wet the hair

Then rub the bar directly between damp hands, or along the lengths.

Massage the scalp

Work up a lather with your fingertips. The lather is finer than with a liquid shampoo.

Rinse thoroughly

Two passes are sometimes needed on very dirty or long hair.

Let the bar dry

Put it on a draining soap dish: a bar left sitting in water shrinks far faster.

In the same range

Ethiopian black cumin runs through several of our products, from cleansers to the pure oil. These are the closest to this bar.

Precautions for use

• External use only, on the hair and scalp.

• Avoid contact with the eyes. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with clean water.

• Do not apply to a damaged, irritated or broken scalp.

• Nigella is a plant: in case of a known allergy to Ranunculaceae or to a cosmetic containing nigella, do not use.

• On first use, a patch test on the inner elbow 24 hours beforehand is a sensible precaution if your skin reacts easily.

• This product is a cosmetic, not a medicine. Persistent itching, redness or flaking call for a dermatological opinion.

• Keep out of reach of children.

Storage

Keep the bar dry, at room temperature, away from direct light. What determines how long it lasts is drying between uses: on a draining surface it lasts months; left in a dish of water it softens and is gone in weeks. Refer to the period-after-opening shown on the pack.

Solid shampoo with nigella: your questions

Why does it lather less than a regular shampoo?

Because the formula is short and the cleansing agent weaker than the surfactants of the cosmetics industry. The amount of lather is not an indicator of cleanliness: it is a visual habit, not a measure of effectiveness.

Does it cure eczema or psoriasis?

No, and a cosmetic may not claim so. Those are dermatological conditions and a matter for a doctor. A shampoo washes, it does not treat.

How long does a 60 g bar last?

It depends on hair length and how often you wash, but above all on how you let it dry. A bar that dries between uses lasts noticeably longer.

Does it suit every hair type?

It is a classic washing shampoo with no particular targeting. As with any change of routine, a few washes of adjustment are common when moving from liquid to solid.

Is the nigella smell strong?

It is marked and spicy, the signature of the Ethiopian oil. It fades after rinsing and drying, without disappearing entirely.

Is it really more environmentally friendly?

On packaging, yes: cardboard instead of a plastic bottle. On the rest it depends on the formula and transport, and we have no life-cycle assessment to claim more than that.
