All about organic Damask rose water!
Origin
From its Latin name Rosa damascena, Damask rose comes from a deciduous shrub that can reach 2 meters in height. Long cultivated by the Persians, the Damask rose was brought back from the Middle East by the Crusaders and spread to Europe and all around the Mediterranean.
This is the species traditionally used to make rose water, also known as hydrosol. But it is also used to makerose essential oil. It is also highly prized in the world of perfumery and aromatherapy.
It is one of the so-called "old roses", in fact this variety is very old. Today, this flower is mainly grown in Morocco, Bulgaria and Turkey. It takes 4 tons of petals to produce 1 kg of essential oil.
Production
It is harvested once a year, but blooms throughout the summer. The flowers are grown exclusively by hand. They are then weighed and stored in the still tank. At least one liter of water is added for every 1 kg of flowers.
Once the vats are hermetically sealed, the water is heated to produce steam. This vapour, which contains the flower's aromatic molecules, is conveyed through a long metal tube, before being cooled by a condenser.
Finally, the hydrosol is collected in tanks and stored in a cool, dark place. They are then packaged in bottles, preferably tinted to protect them from light.
The difference between floral water and hydrolat
The difference between a floral water and a hydrosol lies in the composition of the raw material. A floral water is composed exclusively of petals. A hydrolat, on the other hand, is made up of various parts, including seeds, leaves and stems.
A floral water can therefore be called a hydrolat, but the reverse is not always true.Organic Damask rose oil is a concentrate of benefits. You can find it on our Miel Impérial website.
Note that terms can vary depending on how they are used. For example, in aromatherapy, the term hydrolat is more commonly used. In cosmetics and cooking, the term eau de fleur is more commonly used.
