What is Zamzam water?
Zamzam water refers to the water of one specific well, not to a brand or a type of mineral content. The well is in Mecca, inside the Masjid al-Haram, a short distance from the Kaaba. It is now covered and access to it is part of the mosque facilities: the water is distributed to visitors through fountains and dispensing points spread across the enclosure and its surroundings.
In sensory terms it is a still, clear water with no added gas, whose mineral taste is noticeable if you are used to lightly mineralised spring waters. Transcriptions of the name vary from one language to another: zamzam, zam zam, zem zem, or simply zamzam water in English-language catalogues. They are the same words for the same water.
The Zamzam well, a landmark of Mecca
The Zamzam well has been part of the landscape of the Great Mosque since the earliest descriptions of the city. The geographers and travellers who described Mecca across the centuries place it among the landmarks of the sacred enclosure, alongside the Kaaba and the route between Safa and Marwa. Successive building works have changed its immediate surroundings, but the well has remained in service.
This water belongs to the cultural heritage of the Muslim world as much as to the geography of Mecca. Precautions for use
• Close the bottle after each serving and finish it within a reasonable time once opened.
• Store it upright, in a cool, ventilated place, away from direct light and heat sources.
• Do not freeze it in its bottle and do not leave it in a vehicle parked in the sun.
• Do not refill the empty bottle with another water to serve again: traceability of the content would be lost.
• Keep it out of reach of young children when unsupervised, as with any glass or plastic bottle.
