Habbatul Baraka, the Blessed Seed

Black seed (Nigella sativa) has been used for thousands of years throughout the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. In the Arab world, it is known as Habba Sawda ("black seed") and Habbatul Baraka ("the blessed seed"). It was already part of ancient Egyptian traditions and is still widely used today in Middle Eastern cuisine to flavour bread and pastries.

A treasured part of Eastern traditions

From the time of the Pharaohs to households across North Africa and the Middle East, black seed has been part of everyday life for centuries. It is traditionally enjoyed with honey, added to bread and dishes, and passed down through generations as a precious family tradition. With its Habachia black seed oil, Miel Impérial proudly continues this timeless heritage.

Why choose Ethiopian black seed (Habachia)?

Not all black seeds are the same. First of all, love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena), an ornamental flower, should not be confused with genuine Nigella sativa, the variety traditionally used. Among all origins, Ethiopian seeds, known as Habachia ("Abyssinian" in Arabic), are widely regarded as the finest. They are larger, exceptionally aromatic and produce a rich, spicy oil with a distinctive character.

Our production: freshness and purity above all

Cold pressed every month

Our oil is cold pressed every month in small batches. This means you receive genuinely fresh oil rather than a bottle that has been sitting in storage for months. The gentle cold-pressing process, without heat, preserves all the natural qualities of the seeds.

Nothing but black seed

No additives, no chemicals and no blending with other oils. Simply 100% pressed Nigella sativa seeds. Nothing but pure black seed.

UV-protective glass bottle

Light is the greatest enemy of premium vegetable oils. Our UV-protective glass bottle shields the oil from oxidation and preserves its freshness from pressing to your kitchen.

Tested by a French laboratory

Every batch is analysed by a French laboratory, providing a level of quality assurance and traceability that very few black seed oils on the market can match.

How to use black seed oil

In the kitchen, following Eastern tradition

Its flavour is bold, spicy and slightly bitter. It may surprise you at first, but soon becomes a favourite. The traditional way to enjoy it is to mix one teaspoon with a tablespoon of honey. You can choose from our Moroccan honeys, which perfectly balance its distinctive taste. It is also delicious drizzled cold over salads, fresh cheese or Middle Eastern dishes. Do not heat.

As a skincare oil

Apply a thin layer directly to the skin or blend it with a gentler carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. It nourishes, softens and comforts the skin, especially dry skin. It can also be used in homemade face masks or scrubs for normal to combination skin.

As a hair treatment

Use as a pre-shampoo oil treatment by applying it to the scalp and lengths for 30 minutes to 1 hour before washing. It nourishes dry, brittle or dull hair, restoring softness and shine. A few drops can also be used to strengthen brittle nails.

For massage

When diluted with a neutral carrier oil, it is ideal for relaxing body massages inspired by traditional Eastern wellness rituals.

Precautions for use

• Always perform a patch test on the inside of the elbow and wait 24 hours before applying to the skin.

• For sensitive skin, always dilute with another carrier oil.

• Avoid contact with the eyes, eye area and mucous membranes.

• For culinary use, consume in moderation (typically one teaspoon per day).

Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless advised by a healthcare professional.

• This product is a vegetable oil intended for culinary and cosmetic use. It is not a substitute for a balanced diet or professional medical advice. If you have persistent skin or health concerns, consult your doctor or dermatologist.

Storage

Keep the bottle tightly closed and store it away from light, heat and moisture, ideally below 20°C. The UV-protective glass bottle helps preserve the oil, while proper storage conditions will keep it fresh for even longer.

Frequently Asked Questions – Black Seed Oil

What is Habachia black seed oil?

"Habachia" means "Abyssinian" in Arabic. It refers to an oil made from Nigella sativa seeds grown in Ethiopia, an origin highly prized for its exceptional aroma and quality.

What is the difference between Habba Sawda and black seed?

There is no difference. "Habba Sawda" ("black seed") is simply the Arabic name for the seeds of Nigella sativa. They are also known as black cumin or Habbatul Baraka, meaning "the blessed seed".

What does black seed oil taste like and how can you make it milder?

It has a bold, spicy and slightly bitter flavour, typical of a pure cold-pressed oil. Traditionally, it is mixed with a spoonful of honey, which perfectly balances its distinctive taste.

How can you recognise a high-quality black seed oil?

There are four essential criteria: cold pressing (without heat or solvents), 100% Nigella sativa with no blends, a dark or UV-protective glass bottle, and full traceability, ideally supported by laboratory testing. Our oil meets all four requirements.

Can you cook with black seed oil?

Yes, but only as a finishing oil. Drizzle it over salads, fresh cheese, prepared dishes or mix it with honey. Heating it would damage its valuable natural properties.

How long does black seed oil last?

Because our oil is freshly cold pressed every month and bottled in UV-protective glass, it is best enjoyed within 6 to 12 months after opening when stored in a cool, dark place. Always refer to the best-before date printed on the bottle.
