What is fenugreek seed?

Found in the Mediterranean basin, and in some Asian countries, fenugreek is an annual plant. Easy to grow, it is sown in spring and harvested in autumn. The plant can grow from 30 cm to 1 metre in height. It develops small, pale yellow flowers, which turn into pods in late summer. These pods are filled with ten to twenty yellow to brown fenugreek seeds. It's at this point of maturity that fenugreek seeds are harvested. In traditional medicine, the whole plant is harvested. The leaves are dried and used as herbs. The plant itself is used as a vegetable. Finally, the seeds are used to create spices (caraway, colombo...) or as a natural medicine.

The history of fenugreek

Fenugreek, also known as senegrain, has been used for thousands of years in traditional cooking and medicine. Its name comes from its Greek etymology, meaning " Greek hay ". It owes its name to its distinctive smell and the fact that it was fed to horses to strengthen them. In Egypt, this culinary plant was used as an aromatic, but also to embalm the dead and purify theair. In India and Egypt, its seeds were used to make bread. The seeds can still be found today. In China, it is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. They use it to fortify convalescents, combat diabetes and muscular inflammation. In Chinese medicine, fenugreek is also used to treat rheumatism and infections of the respiratory system. In the Maghreb, it is traditionally used in a dish offered to women who have just given birth. "Halba", from its Arabic name, is known for its lactation-promoting properties. It is therefore used to kick-start and support breastfeeding. Today, fenugreek seeds are mainly used in phytotherapy.

Health benefits

Fenugreek is a plant with numerous health benefits. Here are just a few of them. Food for athletes Fenugreek seed is an excellent natural anabolic. It tones the body and builds muscle mass. It also boosts energy levels. This means you can cope better with sports sessions ,and thusincrease your physical capacity. The mass-building action is concentrated mainly on the breasts. In women, an increase in breast volume has been observed during a fenugreek cure. This brown seed is also known to stimulate theappetite. Its fiber content lowers cholesterol. The result is healthy, fat-free weight gain. It is therefore of interest to people sufferingfromanorexia or wishing to gain weight. On the other hand, if you want to lose weight, we recommend spirulina capsules. They have a satiating effect on the body.

A seed for breastfeeding

Highly recommended duringbreastfeeding, this galactogenic plant is a good dietary supplement for young mothers. Fenugreek stimulates milk production. It increases both volume and quality, providing the infant with a rich diet. It is also used to stimulate contractions. Some pregnant women who have passed their term start a course of fenugreek. Its consumption causes theuterus to contract, triggering and facilitating labor. But be careful! If you are pregnant, fenugreek should onlybe usedin the last month of pregnancy. Uterine contraction early in pregnancy (and before the last month) can lead to miscarriage or premature delivery. Always seek your doctor's advice before taking any dietary supplements.

A food-medicine for diabetics

People suffering from type 2 diabetes can no longer regulate their blood sugar levels. Fenugreek slows down theabsorption of carbohydrates, thus improving the effectivenessofinsulin in the blood. This makes fenugreek a natural alternative to medicated treatments for diabetes. However, before any treatment for diabetics, it is important to consult a diabetologist. To be able to consume fenugreek, you need to adapt your diabetes treatment.
